Chontales de Tabasco - Yokot'an

The Mayan-chontales they are an ethnic mayense group that inhabits the current state of Tabasco.

The yokot'anob (meaning Chontales in the native language) population occupies five municipalities of the state of Tabasco: Centla, El Centro, Jonuta, Macuspana and Nacajuca. In this last one the indigenous population is majority. We have that in the municipality of Centla it occupies the north, the area of the swamps, lagoons and the most intricate part in the pluvial net. In Macuspana it is also the north. As in Jonuta it occupied until recently the most remote places. In El Centro, the indigenous population is in the limits with the municipality of Centla and beside the river Grijalva. Around159 communities exist of filiation yokot'an in the state.

Language - The language yokot'an belongs to the Mayan family, together with the chol and the chortí, among others. Three big dialectal variants exist that of Macuspana, that of El Centro and that of Nacajuca. Most of the population Mayan-chontal is bilingual.

Health - it is thought that the origin of the illnesses resides in a rupture with the cosmic order. The indigenous medicine is based mainly on herbs but it combines with ceremonies that involve the supernatural. Among the indigenous therapists the hueseros (the bones man), the ensalmadoras and the midwives highlight. The sorcerers manage the magic, to which mortal wrongs are attributed. The yokot'anob rejects the allopath medicine.

Housing - Formerly, rural house was made of jahuacte and palm, with the wooden pillars that resisted the constant humidity of the environment. They were fresh and without windows. They had a false that served as warehouse and refuge in the event of a flood. They were extensive families for what the property had interrelated several housings. Should the need arise, the house was dismantled, the indispensable things put in the cayucos and the family moved to another part.

Dress - Although there are no antecedents of traditional dresses, it is possible that the men formerly used a breech-clout and the women a cloth hold to the waist. Knowadays Mayan-chontales use the mestizo suit (common clothes).

The yokot'anob have a conception of the supernatural world that highlights a series of entities related with their environment. Doña Bolom (Ix Bolom) is the owner of the sea and it is visited by beings such as, "men tiger" and "mecaguas". The myths are full of supernatural beings that inhabit the environment like the "gods of the earth", the owners of the lagoons and of the swamp.

Parties - The most important parties in the chontal world are dedicated to the Virgin, especially to that of the Carmen, the fishermen's past Patroness. She is related with the moon, the great goddess Ix Bolom related with the fertility and to the cycles of the sea. July 16 people take offerings; there are also processions, fireworks and funfairs.
