Mixes - Ayook
Country: Mexico

The Mixes calls themselves Ayuuk jä'äy. The language that they speak is "ayuuk" that is the name with which historically the group is known.

The Mixe region is to the northeast of the state of Oaxaca. It is adjacent to the northwest with the former districts from Villa Alta to the north with Choapam and with the state of Veracruz; to the south with Yautepec and to the southeast with Juchitán and Tehuantepec.

Among the most important mountain elevations of the Sierra Mixe is the Zempaltépetl, the Cerro de la Malinche and the Monte Blanco, which exceed the 3,300 m. over sea level.

Language - The linguistic family mixe-zoqueana is integrated by the mixe (ayuuk), the zoque and popoluca; although there is who includes the tapachulteca (extinct language).

Health - To begin in the medical practice, the indigenous therapists affirm that the candidates should go by a series of tests sent by God, as well as to learn the healing techniques through visions and dreams. Inside the traditional specialists we find cleaners, yerberos, sobadores, hueseros, pacifiers, culebreros, midwives, bewitching and rezadores. Inside these specialists, it highlights the figure of the xëëmapye (priest reader of the calendar) who is consulted to know about the luck and destiny.

Housing - The traditional housing, built with palm roofs, of two waters, wooden plank walls or bajareque and earth floor, has been disappearing in a very quick rhythm. The house is, in general, in a rectangular way. They have a space dedicated to the kitchen-dining room and one or two rooms as bedrooms, warehouse or living room. Most of the housings have a patio and / or backyard dedicated to the cultivation of some fruit-bearing trees, ornament plants and medicinal, and a space more for the animals.

Dress - The men dress to the rural usage, cotton shirt or poplin, jeans pants, palm hat and huaraches or rubber boots. The woman's attire is so variable that this can indicate us the place of its origin. Four typical suits are those corresponding to Tamazulapam, Mixistlán, Cotzocon and Guichicovi; each one with their variants, but all consist of a tunic and mess that the own women make in waist loom.

The individual is formed by two "souls", a human and another immortal tso'ok that corresponds to the indigenous vision. The tona tso'ok is acquired when the birth of an individual and that of an animal coincide, the tona and individual will run during all their existence parallel lucks.

Parties - The parties that take place in the high medium area of the region ayuuk are characterized by the confrontation among diverse bands in "musical bereavements". The dances complete functions of community integration. The carnivals allow the social relaxation of the group; finally we find the pilgrimages that in general are carried out to the exterior from the region to sacred places as Santa Catarina Albarradas, San Pablo Güila, Tlacolula, Otatitlán, in Veracruz and to visit the black Christ of Esquipulas in Guatemala.
