Mexico: Indigenous People

Tojolabal Grandmother and grandson

Tojolabales - Tojolwinik otik
Country: Mexico

The Tojolabales at the present time are a population of only 35,000 people. They are located mainly in the municipalities of Altamirano and the Margaritas in the state of Chiapas.

The Tojolabales have been the most excluded ethnic group in the country, socially, economically and politically. They have been ignored even by the avid studious anthropologists of the indigenous cultures. Few studies or summary of testimonies exist on this ethnic group. Some attribute it to, that contrary to other indigenous groups, the Tojolabales have lost their coloring in traditional costumes and they don't have any party colorful or attractive ritual.

Dress - The men only dress with clothes that they buy in the city. Only those that are of age dress the tojol wexi (true or authentic short). Most old men no longer wear the tojol wex. Only the ones that are used to it.

The women usually put on the tojol juna (true or authentic skirt), and also westernized clothes as dresses and skirts. But mainly they put on the tojol juna, blouses that are embroidered with many colors. Likewise the skirts are very colorful. So to look beautiful they put fittings, braids, colorful cords and small fittings on the border.

History - In the colonial time the present tojolabal area was not very populated. The population's shortage is explained by the fact that the region was a border area among the lands conquered by the Spaniards and those of the "rebel" Indians. There were repeated confrontations between these two parties.
Parties - The fiestas that the tojolabal communities celecbrate are made with music, food, fireworks, a religious celebration, and candles.

The main parties are:

3rd of May Day of Santa Cruz

The day of the patron of the community.

Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos)

Christmas.

Holy Week

Games and tournaments in the community or among communities.
