ex-Convent of Santo Domingo San
Cristobal de las Casas Santo Domingo's convent is still testimony of the important roll friars had in the history of Chiapas. It was center of an extensive pastoral area called county of San Vicente of Chiapa, where ninety percent of the indigenous population lived. From the arrival of the friars in 1545 until their expulsion in 1859 (by the Reformation) Chiapas had a lot of dominican influence. The convent of the Ciudad Real (now San Cristóbal de las Casas) was one of seven that were erected in Chiapas, there were others in: Chiapa de los Indios (now Chiapa de Corzo), Copanaguastla, Socoltenango, Comitán, Ocosingo, Tecpatan and Chapultenango. The architectural elements that we find typical of the XVI century are the cloister, the church, you can observe outside in the atrium the possible wall, but now it is the park and market of crafts of Santo Domingo. The convent is also the Centro Cultural de los Altos and the Museum of Archaeology, Ethnography, History and Art. It has permanent exhibition rooms on the history of San Cristobal and itinerant rooms. Next to the ex-convent visit the store of the indigenous cooperative of Sna Jolobil with eight hundred members of the Altos of Chiapas. Opening hours: 10:00 - 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: $30 pesos. Free: Students, teachers, INSEN and children. Santo Domingo's ex-convent and the Market of Crafts are in the corner of General Utrilla and Dr. Navarro. |
