Huitepec Reserve
Country: Mexico.

The Reserve of the Huitepec is an initiative of the environmentalist association PRONATURA. It is a small reserve of 135 hectares whose objective is to rescue a piece of an endangered ecosystem. These ecosystems exists in humid conditions, where little light arrives to the floor, and on the hillsides. Unfortunately the hillsides are deforested to open the way to cornfields (corn, bean and pumpkin) that generally causes the erosion of the earth.

The Reserve is on the east hillside of the Huitepec, this volcano is about 10 million years old. The Huitepec and the Tzonzhuitz are the most important mountains in the region. The tzotziles calls this volcano Muktevitz which means "Great Mountain."

Inside the reserve you can walk a circuit 2 km long that goes up the mountain up to a mirador and comes back on the other side. Along the circuit you will se signs with questions about the place used by guides of PRONATURA (Calle Benito Juárez 11-B. Tel. 6785000) or of the Network of Community Tourism (Real de Mexicanos 16. Tel. 6780456.) You can visit the reserve independently and it is a pleasure to do so.

Price of admission $15 pesos. Schedule: 9:00-16:00 Tuesday to Sunday. To arrive take a bus from the market of San Cristóbal de las Casas that has written on the windscreen "San Ramón - La Quinta", from the final stop walk about 300 meters to the entrance of the reserve. Another option is to take a transport that goes to San Juan Chamula (from the market also) and to ask the driver to drop you in the reserve's entrance. Cost $3 pesos.
