Tepoztlan Tepoztlán, word that derives of the náhuatl, means "Next to the Copper" or "Place of the broken stones." Tepoztlán is the municipal capital that takes the same name, located to the northeast of Cuernavaca in a valley surrounded by hills of swollen formations. As most of the Mexican towns its divided in different neighborhoods and each one with their chapel like "The Holy Trinidad" and "San Michael Archangel." In 1995 a private company sought to build a great residential area and golf field in tepozteca's lands but most of the tepoztecos opposed, were able to cancel the project. This has not been the first intent of transforming this beautiful town into a mega resort, but the most known incident and the organized town stopped it. Tepoztlán has the fame of being a place of a lot of cosmic energy and it is reminded by all the stores that sell quartzes, read the tarot cards, the aura, carry out cleaning session with herbs, among other esoteric practices. What can you visit? * The Convent of "La Natividad" (The Nativity) next to the main church of the town. * The pyramid of the Tepozteco that is from the center about 3km, a trip that is worthwhile to make. * The National Park "The Tepozteco", all the hills around the town and towards the north. Excellent for hiking, rock climbing, rappel and camping. * The Museum Carlos Pellicer with their exhibition of archaeological pieces of the site. Open from Tuesday to Sunday at 10:00 to 17:00hrs. Entrance fee: $5.00 pesos. * The handcraft
market during the weekends. Fairs & Fiestas * The Carnival in Tepoztlán three days before Wednesday of ash (in February) it is one of the main parties of the town. Here you can see dances as that of the "Chinelos". The origin of the "Chinelo" is ignored , its dress seems to be inspired by the tunic of the Arabs and in the case of Tepoztlán it has evolved until acquiring great elegance. * September 8 is
carried out the Party of the Virgin of the Nativity or "Tepeihuítl".
It celebrates the Virgin's nativity and the conversion to the Christianity
of the Tepoztécatl, old ruler of Tepoztlán. Ecoturismolatino's opinion This must be one of the most cosmopolitan towns of the world, where its inhabitants mestizo natives, indigenous nahua population and the ao called tepostizos (people of Mexican or international origin that have moved to Tepoztlán) converge. A combative and organized, hospitable and magical town. We propose you you to stay in the camp of international fame (thanks to the Scouts) "Meztitla." How to arrive? You can arrive from Cuernavaca taking a bus of the cooperative Ometochtli from the market "Adolfo López Mateo" that leaves every 15 minutes from 8:00 until 20:00 hrs. daily (they start earlier on weekends). From Mexico City take a bus "Pullman de Morelos" to Tepoztlán from the South Bus Terminal of "Taxqueña." |
