Tuxtla Gutiérrez
Country: Mexico.

The name Tuxtla comes from the náhuatl tuchtlan that means "where the rabbits are plentiful", and Gutiérrez for Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez who was an important leader at the beginning of the XIX century that fought so that Chiapas did not become a part of Guatemala. Tuxtla Gutiérrez was not an important city until 1892 when it was declared the capital city of the state.

The city doesn't offer many attractive ecotourism spots, but if it is a good base to visit reservations, national parks and the Zoo Miguel Álvarez del Toro (ZOOMAT).

To arrive from Mexico City you can arrive by air coming from the international airport Benito Juárez and by bus from the terminal in Mexico of TAPO. The journey is about 14 hours and the cost around $450 pesos.

The ZOOMAT was founded in 1942 and it harbors more than 220 species, of which exist in total about 1,500 animals. The zoo is a park-reserve with extensive cages for the animals, but also one passes by free animals on the corridors and inside the areas of other animals. The trail has a longitude of 2.5 km. All the species that are in the ZOOMAT are from Chiapas. It is considered one of the best zoo's in the world. It is impressive, and at the same time sad, to see so many of the species here classified as endangered species such as the: Red Guacamaya, Deer Kid, Jaguar, Turkey Ocelado and many more. The opening hours are from Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00 hours. The entrance is free.

To arrive take a van, colectivo, from the street 7a Av. Sur Oriente with 1a Calle Oriente Sur. It costs $3 pesos and it leaves you in front of the ZOOMAT.
