“Hi everyone! I'm Karen Wantland, Consulting Coordinator for Ecoturismolatino, I'm from Guatemala and work in the ecotourism field because I believe that it is a great opportunity to develop our communities and promote our natural and cultural sources in Latin America. I'm in Ecotursimolatino
since 2001 to promote and develop programs about sustainable tourism and
training government, NGO´s or private institutions in tourism and

| Biography | I was born in Guatemala City in 1975, daughter of Guatemalan parents, my great grandfather had a Cherokee ancestor and that's why my last name seems to be English but I'm a 100% chapina (from Guatemala). | ||||||||||||
| Academic Background | I have studied some courses in conservation and tourism; in 2000 I got the degree of "Licenciatura en Ecoturismo" from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala and an Analysis and Conflict Transformation Diploma. | ||||||||||||
| In 2003 I finished a course in Popular Education and I would like to study a Master Degree in Finances or Economic Development next year. | |||||||||||||
| Some of the courses that I studied are: La Husteca en Mexico, Tourist services commercialization, more cleaning technologies, speology and Service Best. I also have been in some Archeological Investigation Symposiums and in Congresses in tourism and conservation. | |||||||||||||

| Financial analysis of a tourism project in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala and development of some aspects (IEPADES/BANCO MUNDIAL): This was a 8 months project where some of the products where a financial analysis of a tourism project, two courses (for young people and micro business managers), a Web Page, promotional material, fam trips for tour operators and newspaper and workshops for a tourism group to develop work programs. | |||||||||||||
| Investigation about the work system in FONDO DE TIERRAS, Guatemala (APESA/BANCO MUNDIAL): With the investigation, APESA found the problems in the FONDO DE TIERRAS operation to make recommendations to the General Manager. | |||||||||||||
