Fazenda
Rio Negro
The Fazenda (cattle ranch) Rio Negro, located on the shores of the Negro river, in the heart of the Pantanal, is one of the most traditional of the region. Here a series of different activities are combined with the typical ranch tasks, together with the pleasure of relaxing while listening to the sounds of nature. In May 1999, the Fazenda was bought by Conservação Internacional (Conservation International - Brazil), an international non-profit organization dedicated to preserve endangered ecosystems. The objective is to integrate the Fazenda to a network of private protected areas that CI-Brasil is supporting, together with other local ranch owners. The income generated through ecotourism is invested in research and the conservation of the Pantanal. The main house, built in 1920, still preserves the original style. It has ample dining and living rooms, and spacious verandas. In total the farm hosts up to 42 guests with two other buildings - the guests and the research houses. All rooms with private bathrooms and air conditioning. In case of meetings, the farm offers a meeting room that fits up to 16 people next to a laboratory for research uses. Activities In the Pantanal, all sorts of life flourish in a ceaseless motion. Fazenda Rio Negro offers an extensive list of leisure and learning options. Horseback riding, hiking, river excursions by boat and canoe, "pata-choca" ride (a military vehicle adapted to local conditions), are some of them. The Fazenda also offers other activities, as attractive as the others, like observing hyacinth macaws from the coziness of your hammock, tasting regional dishes, and sharing a "tereré" (local cold drink) at the warehouse with the peões (Pantanal cowboys). Typical and home-made meals are served at the Fazenda, including a wide variety of options. In order to help us cater for specific meal requirements, please fill in the reservation form attached. Location The Fazenda Rio Negro, located in State of Mato Grosso do Sul is located 240 kilometers away from the capital, Campo Grande and 120 kilometers from the city of Aquidauana. The Fazenda is accessed by plane all year round. Planes leave from Aquidauana (30-minutes flight to the fazenda) and from Campo Grande (1-hour flight). Transportation service is done through third parties. Guests may choose the air taxi company that they wish. The fazenda could recommend some, but that does not imply responsibility for the services provided by them, as well as, the prices informed below may be changed without prior notice. Environment The Pantanal is the largest freshwater wetland in the planet. The woody plain formed by the Paraguay River and its tributaries is a great sedimentation basin. These sediments of varied composition (from sand to mud) have been deposited over millions of years forming the different sub-regions of the Pantanal. Because of this, the Pantanal is ever-changing. Each new cycle of rains and floods drastically modifies the river beds and redefines the land, nurturing the abundant and splendid wildlife, composed of thousands of plant and animal species. The activities that are organized for the guests allow them to take a close lookout at marsh deer, capybara, caiman, monkey, giant river otter, tapir, collared peccary, macaws, jabiru stork, and with luck, even a jaguar. We would like to make clear that wildlife observation is never assured in the Pantanal. Animals follow the waters cycle searching for food. This means that species that are seen at the fazenda vary according to the season, animals own cycle, and guests' luck.
