Cerro
Coyote Mountain Preserve Cerro Coyote is a 70-acre private preserve encompassing a mountaintop in the Tilarán chain at about 1200 meters in altitude. The preserve is open to Inn at Coyote Mountain guests and those who come for day tours, including agro- and culinary tours. Cerro Coyote has trails through primary growth forest as well as open areas, with stupendous vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Nicoya, and Nicoya Peninsula. The preserve is about 1 1/2 hours drive north of San Jose, near the village of Piedades Sur. Coyote Mountain has over twelve fresh water springs and encompasses at least three different eco-zones. It is in the same chain of mountains as Monteverde. The top of Cerro Coyote has elfin forest, while the slope is drier tropical forest, and the Caribbean side lusher. Flora and fauna includes numerous orchid and bromeliad species, agouti, sloths, toucans, toucanets, trogans, bats, and significant insect life. The Inn at Coyote Mountain is located at the bottom entrance to the preserve, and has 5 guests rooms. The Inn also hosts the Tropical Creole Cooking School, Central America's only vacation cooking school, which also hosts programs on sustainable agricultural systems and tropical agriculture. Cerro Coyote is surrounded by coffee farms and is one of the only fresh water sources in the area. The owners are reforesting some areas within the preserve. The Inn also has organic vegetable and herb gardens as well as fruit and spice orchards. Cerro Coyote, S.A. practices sustainable agriculture and hires almost exclusively from the local community, supporting the area's economic development. The property is within easy driving distance of the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Preserve, which present visitors of easily visiting two very different private preserves, including Pacific mountain forest, elfin forest, and cloud forest. Neighboring properties are mostly devoted to coffee or cattle. Coffee tours are also possible. Combining eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, reforestation, and preservation the preserve is also notable for its unique situation overlooking nearly 60 kilometers of Pacific coastline. The altitude drops from 1,200 meters to 0 within 7 kilometers going to the west from Cerro Coyote. Cerro
