Lagos de Montebello
Country: Mexico.

Declared as National Park on December 16th 1959 it has an extension of 6,022 hectares of pine forests and pine-oak. The Park has 59 lagoons of different dimensions. Among the most important are: Lagoon of San Lorenzo, San José, Bosque Azul, Encantada, Ensueño, Esmeralda, Agua Tinta, Montebello, Cinco Lagunas, Pojoj and Tziscao.

The colors of the lagoons, between green and blue, are a great attractive for the tourism, you can also visit San Rafael's grottos that although small, the millennary formations of stalagmites and stalactites, as well as the underground river are fascinating.

The activities that one can carry out in this beautiful park are horse-back riding in the lagoon of Bosque Azul and Montebello; paddle around the lagoons of Pojoj and Cinco Lagunas y tree trunk rafts, camping in Bosque Azul, and cycling on the highways that take you to the lagoons.

If you want to visit the grottos you go to the lagoon of Bosque Azul and walk until the paved road ends, this spot is called "El Paso del Soldado" where one can eat, rent horses or either walk to the grottos by yourself or with guide. We went with a guide and he took us to a couple of grottos, one with an underground river.

To arrive to Lagos de Montebello transport leaves from Comitán on the Line Comitán-Montebello take it from 2a. Avenida Pte. Sur. Choose your destination well. (to which lagoon do you want to go?)
