Declared National Park on December 8th 1980, with an extension of 21,789 hectares. A canyon that has in its highest part 1,000 meters. You will be able to see different kinds of ecosystems merged together, resulting in a mixture of species encounters as: crocodiles and monkeys. You can make a journey from Chiapa de Corzo on boat taking you all along the canyon traveling on the river Grijalva up to the Chicoasén dam, the fifth biggest dam of the world. When Chiapanecos fought against the Spaniards, the Chiapanecos resolved not to surrender to the enemy and preferred to jump off the cliffs into the canyon.

Since the dam was built in 1980 the maximum depth of the river is 200 meters. This dam has a curtain of concrete of 260 meters. With its electricity Chiapas supplies energy to Tabasco, Mexico City and Central America.

The journeys on motor boats from Chiapa de Corzo cost $70 pesos per person. The journeys take around two hours approximately, it depends on the hurry of the lanchero and the tourist season. You board the boats on the pier, when arriving to Chiapa de Corzo walk from the Zocalo towards the river in direction to the ex-convent of Santo Domingo.

When you visit Chiapa de Corzo visit the convent already mentioned and the Museum de Laja, open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hours. The convent is beautiful and it has been very well restored although few frescoes have been rescued that date from the XVI century.

Getting to Chiapa de Corzo from Tuxtla Gutiérrez take a minibus ($6 pesos) from the corner of 2a Av. Sur Oriente and 2a Calle Oriente Sur, about 4 blocks from the cathedral.
